The region of Sonipat was initially a part of Delhi District until 1912, later becoming a part of Rohtak District in September of that year. The Gohana Tehsil remained under Rohtak District until the establishment of Sonipat as a separate district on 22 December 1972. The commencement of the first Judicial Court in Sonipat occurred on 15 May 1959, with Shri Surjeet Singh Raikhy serving as the first Sub. Judge First Class at Kot Mohalla, Sonipat. Initially, there was only one court, and the first Senior Sub Judge, Shri I.P. Vashishth, was appointed on 29 March 1973.

The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate was established separately on 13 May 1975, with Shri R.S. Bhatia as the first Chief Judicial Magistrate. Shri V.K. Kaushal joined as the first Additional District & Sessions Judge, Sonipat, on 18 October 1973.

Sonipat District attained the status of a Sessions Division on 19 May 1983, as per the Haryana Government Notification No. 3/1/78JJ(4). Shri I.M. Malik assumed the role of the first District & Sessions Judge at Sonipat on 8 June 1983.

The present-day Judicial Complex-cum-Mini Secretariat began hosting Judicial Courts in 1977, replacing the Old Tehsil building. The legal community in Sonipat has grown substantially since the district’s inception, with the District Bar Association boasting a large number of enrolled advocates.

Sonipat Sessions Division comprises three Subdivisions: Gohana, Ganaur, and Kharkhoda. Initially a Tehsil, Gohana was upgraded to a Sub-Division on 12 April 1965. Ganaur Sub-Division saw its first Judicial Court start functioning on 17 September 2001, with Sh. Sudhir Jiwan as the inaugural Judicial Officer. Kharkhoda Sub-Division’s Judicial Court commenced operations on 27 April 2015, with Dr. Kavita Kamboj serving as the first Judicial Officer.

The historical roots of Sonipat trace back to Mahabharata times, with its ancient name being Sonaprastha. Its association with the Mahabharata is deep-seated, and it has evolved through different districts before becoming a separate entity in 1972. Sonipat is renowned for its connection to Atlas Cycle Industries Limited, which started in 1952 and exports bicycles globally.

Sonipat is also recognized as an educational hub, hosting schools like S.M. Hindu High School (established in 1914) and universities such as Din Bandhu Sir Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology and Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila University of Education. The construction of the Rajiv Gandhi Education City in Rai is underway, further enhancing the educational landscape.

In addition to its educational significance, Sonipat is known for its temples, including the Mahavir Jain Temple, Atlas Temple, Shambhu Dayal Temple, and the historical Tomb of Khizarat Hayat Khan. The city also features Gurudwaras and Mosques, contributing to its reputation as the “land of temples and schools.” Currently, there are 347 villages within the jurisdiction of District Sonipat.
